Senate Passes Health Care

A momentous step was taken this morning when the U.S. Senate passed its version of health care reform. This would not have been possible without the election of a Democrat as president and strong Democratic majorities in both houses of congress. In the Senate, every Democrat voted in favor and every Republican against.

After the Christmas recess a conference committee from both chambers, House and Senate, will have to reconcile the different bills both have passed. Once this is done America will join the rest of the advanced world in recognizing that health care is a fundamental right, not a privilege for those who have the most money or work for the best employers.

Congratulations to the President, the Democrats in Congress and to everyone who has worked to help make this dream a reality.

Meet in the Middle/Pride in the Park

On the heels of a California Supreme Court ruling upholding Proposition 8 (anti-gay marriage bill), COS Young Democrats participated in events supporting marriage equality. A voter registration drive was conducted at the 2nd Annual Pride in the Park hosted by Queer Visalia at Plaza Park. Thank you so much to everyone who visited our table and supported our club!
Other club members participated in a statewide rally for marriage equality in Fresno known as Meet in the Middle. Activists from every county in California marched 14 miles on Golden State Freeway from Selma to Fresno. Good work Young Democrats! (Photo courtesy of Van Landingham of Tulare-Kings PFLAG.)
